Which dogs need de-shedding
De-shedding is mainly for dogs with a double coat: a soft, dense undercoat under a layer of longer guard hairs. Breeds Ocala groomers see often include Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Huskies, Australian Shepherds, Corgis, Pomeranians and many shepherd and retriever mixes. Some short-coated breeds, like Pugs and Beagles, also shed more than people expect and can benefit from a de-shed bath.
Why shedding seems constant in Ocala
Many double-coated dogs blow their undercoat as the seasons change, shedding in large clumps for a few weeks. In Central Florida, with long warm seasons and dogs who move between air-conditioned homes and hot yards, a lot of owners notice heavy shedding for much of the year rather than just twice a year. Regular de-shedding keeps that loose fur from matting close to the skin, where it can trap heat and moisture.
What a de-shedding treatment usually includes
- A thorough bath with a shampoo and often a conditioner chosen to help loosen the undercoat.
- A high-velocity dryer that blows loose undercoat out of the coat while drying, which removes a surprising amount of fur.
- Brushing and undercoat tools such as slicker brushes, undercoat rakes and de-shedding combs to pull out what is left.
- Finishing touches like nails, ears and a tidy of the feet and rear, depending on the package.
Heavily packed coats can take longer, and some groomers charge more for dogs that have not been brushed in a while. The groomer will tell you before they start.
Should you shave a double-coated dog?
It is tempting in an Ocala summer, but many groomers and veterinarians advise against shaving double-coated breeds. The coat helps protect against sun and heat, and shaved undercoat can grow back patchy or uneven. Thinning out the undercoat with regular de-shedding usually does more for comfort. If your dog is badly matted, though, shaving may be the kinder option; the groomer can explain the choices.
How often to book
Many owners schedule de-shedding every couple of months, with extra visits during heavy coat blows. Brushing at home a few times a week between appointments helps a lot. Our guide to grooming between appointments in Florida has simple routines, and diet plays a part in coat health too; see what to feed your dog.
Salon or mobile?
De-shedding sends a lot of hair flying, which some owners are happy to keep out of their own bathroom. A salon visit is often the lower-cost choice, while a mobile groomer handles it in the van at your driveway. Pair it with a nail trim, and check typical costs on our Ocala prices page.

Common questions
Does de-shedding stop shedding completely?
No. Healthy dogs keep shedding, but removing the loose undercoat means far less of it ends up on your floors and furniture for a while afterward.
How long does a de-shedding appointment take?
It depends on the dog's size and how much loose coat there is. Large, heavy-coated dogs take longer. The groomer can give you an estimate.
Is it OK to shave my Husky or Golden Retriever for summer?
Many groomers advise against shaving double coats because the coat protects against sun and heat and may grow back unevenly. Regular de-shedding is usually the better option unless the coat is badly matted.
